International Youth Day 2017

On 12 August 2017, we will be celebrating International Youth Day! The 2017 theme of International Youth Day focuses on the power of youth contributions to conflict prevention and sustainable peace. As agents of change, youths today can play key roles in deterring and resolving conflicts.

Every year, Youth Day focuses on a different theme of youth empowerment guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global response to the worlds increasingly pressing developmental challenges. Ambitious and determined, the agenda shapes and guides our developmental priorities with 17 target goals. Although youth experience first hand many of the issues the SDGs wish to address, the first implementation attempt (the Millennium Goals) did not consult any youth. In response to this absence, young people played a key role in shaping the 2030 agenda and understand the stakes: it is their future on the line.

Today’s generation of adolescents and young people (between 10 and 24 years old) number close to 1.8 billion. With youth populations higher than at any other point in human history and their own futures at stake, youth involvement is key to successfully achieving the call for participation, inclusion, accountability and revitalized global engagement.

This year, MSRI asked a few of it’s youth on what “Youth Building Peace” looks like! Check out some of their answers here!
